Somebody Everyone Listens To by Suzanne Supple

4.5 Stars

Retta Lee Jones knew she couldn't stay in Starling.   She was a small town girl with big dreams.  Just like all the famous country stars who made it big before her, Retta knew she had what it took to be a singing sensation.  Leaving her best friend Brenda and her secret crush Bobby behind would be tough, but Retta was determined to live in Nashville and become a country signing legend.

After high school graduation, Retta borrows her great-aunt's car along with the money she had saved working all year, $500, and leaves her family and small town behind.  Music City isn't kind to, Retta, though.  She gets mugged and beat up soon after arriving and finds herself homeless without any money or real friends there for support.

Retta's luck finally takes a turn when she finds a job and begins getting recognition for her singing talent.  When Retta's Daddy calls her, though, to tell her that her mother has left him, Retta must make a choice.  Should she move back home to help her family and to be with the people she loved and trusted - or keep fighting to fulfill her dreams?

  1. Somebody Everyone Listens To is a great book. Retta finishes high school and wants to go to Nashville to live her dream. She finally gets a car to go to Nashville on and gets money that will last her only for a short while. When she gets there she first looks around for a job but cant find one. She sleeps in her car and luckily meets a a guy named Ricky. He helps her a lot. When she goes to a music festival some boys hurt her and steal her purse with all she has. She does not have any hope left. She finds a sigh that says "singer wanted." She gets the job but there is not that much people that come there. Retta then has to go home quickly because he mom left her dad. Retta goes but her dad later tells her to go back because Ricky offered her a full-time job. When she goes back Ricky gets her two tickets to a place where people can sing and maybe become a singer. She sings there once but barely anyone says anything to her. She makes CD's and Judy Dickenson actually notices her. She is a lady that is very picky but everyone listens to. She finally is about to get what she wants.

  2. Somebody Everybody Listens To is a great book! When Retta finishes high school she wants to become a professional singer in Nashville. She gets a little bit of money to start off in Nashville, but when she gets there she realizes how little time this will last her. On her way into Nashville something on her car breaks down and the guy named Ricky came to tow her car to his shop so he could fix it. Ricky and Retta become good friends, Ricky even allows Retta to work for him and stay at his auto den. Retta goes through many obstacles while she is in Nashville. Retta found a singing job at a motel and not many people come but she still gets paid. Later in the book Ricky passes away from a heart attack and now Retta has no where to stay, she goes back home for a while to sort things out and think about if she still wants to become a singer.

  5. In this novel, Retta makes a courageous decision to up & go to Nashville Tennessee to pursue her dream as a country singer. It is a great book of encouragement and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys or appreciates country music. One thing I loved about this book is the little bio of different country singers at the beginning of each chapter. This book got a little slow through the middle, however. I like how it doesn't make stardom seem easy to achieve like many stories do. It gave off a good theme of perserverence and that hard work definitely pays off.

  6. This is truely a amazing book. It talks about the hard times that people have to go through but how it doesn't always have to be bad. Retta is a small town girl with an amazing singing voice, and she wants to go and make the most of it, so she does. The first few days don't go so well for her. She gets mugged, her car breaks down, and she's running out of money. The guy who fixes her car gives her a temporary job if he fixes her car for free. And she gets a gig singing at a old hotel. All is going really well until her dad calls and tells her that her mom left him for another man. Retta has to go back home and take care of her dad. But, in the end her dad tells her to go back and do what makes you happy. When she does, she gets a cd out for a few of her songs, but then her friend dies. All in all though it goes really well, and I would recomend this book to any one who loves to read.
