A Long Walk to Water tells the true story of a young girl named Nya and a young boy named Salva, one of the lost boys of Sudan. The reader learns about life in war-torn Sudan - the fear, famine and dehydration, the desperation of the Sudanese as they are forced to flee their homes and walk thousands of miles through the hot desert in order to locate one the the refugee camps - where living conditions were also deplorable.

With the belief that his family has been killed, Salva is left alone and must fend for himself.  Though he walks with the others, he is not shown much mercy by the adults.  Silva loses his one friend to a lion who drags the young boy away at night.  Silva knows no matter how difficult things become, he must keep walking or die.  Despite his never-ending thirst, the blistering sand underneath his bare feet, and the gnawing, deep hunger which never goes away, Salva is determined to survive.

Eventually, Salva is chosen by American missionaries to come to America and be sponsored by an American family.  Salva is amazed by the luxuries America can afford him and decides he must return to Sudan in order to share his good fortune and to help his people.  It is during his first trip home where Salva learns his family is still alive, and his life intersects with the young Nya.

  1. A Long Walk to water is about two people's point of view ,( Salva and naya). this story takes place in Sudan, a little bit in Kenya and america. in sudan there is a war between the rebles and the government . a battle broke loose while salva was in school so he was told to run away and never look back . so he left with a bunch of people out into the middle of the desert without his family and no one to turn to . he becames friends with a little boy and they stuck with each other every day and while they were walking in the group salva sees his uncle he hasnt seen his uncle in years because he was fighting for the war and salva found hope that every thing was going to be ok . unfourtinatly salvas friend died and later on so did his uncle so he was alone yet again but because of their death he pressed on even more because he knew that they both wanted to make it to the refuge camp so he was going to do it for them . he makes it to the camp but finds out its not much beter than the wilderness so he is moved to like five different camps all over . and when he was in a refuge camp in Kenya he had the oppertunity to go to america to start a new life . when he got to America he had a new family and life style he wanted to help sadan because he knew how hard it is to survive . ( switch to naya) naya lived in southern sadan and had to walk every day to a water pond far from home and she apsolutly hated it one day people came to her area and built a well . that day she became very happy because she would never have to walk tht long way or wory about her family being thirsty again . she saw the person that built it for them and went up to him to thank him. his name was salva . the boy who moved to america and wanted to help sudan

  3. This book is story about two children from the same place with different problems at different times. Salva, the lost boy from Sudan, is trying to get away from the war happening in Sudan. Salva loses his friend to lions and his uncle to warriors. In the midst of trying to get to safety, he is trying to find his family who he thinks are dead. The trip was long and hard but he made it to Etheopia. A few years later, the war moved into where the camp where he was and was forced to make his way to Kenya, where the other camp is. He had to take control and lead thousands of boys there. He finally made it a year and a half later. After staying there many years, they began choosing who will go and live in America, and Salva's name was chosen! He went and lived in America until he heard word that his father was still alive at home. He went back to see, and it was true. His father told him most of his family was alive too. Salva had to go back to America until the war was over so he didn't have to fight. Many years later, he came back and brought water to many places including Nya's. Nya is the other character in the story. She has been having problems throughout the book about water. She would have to walk miles a day to get clean water until finally, Salva came back and gave her village a large supply of water.

  4. This book is about two kids from the war torn country of Sudan, who are trying to survive. Salva is a young boy, the age of 12, who was torn away from his family when the war was coming in to his own village. He traveld with many other people from his tribe a long ways, all the way into the lion country. He is reunited with his uncle there and meets a new friend. Sadly, a lion ends up taking him in the night and kills him. Salva and his uncle travel through the desert with their group of about 30 people. A group of rebles come and rob the group. They tie their leader to a tree, Salva's uncle, and make the group watch as the shoot him. Salva is then determined to survive, since he is all alone. The other kid, Nya, is living in a village with short water supply. Half of the day she has to walk to fetch water for her family. Her village is in need of help to get enough water to survive. Soon enough, help arives.

  5. A Long Walk to Water was a fascinating book. It tells of two stories that go together at the end. The story is about a boy named Salva who gets separated from his village by a war. He and others from his tribe, the Dinka, are headed east to Ethiopia. They are going to the refugee camps. On the way there Salva meets up with his uncle. His uncle tells him his family is most likely dead. A group of attackers rob the refugees and kill Salva's uncle. Salva goes through many refugee camps until he gets to one where some lucky boys will be chosen to go to America. Salva gets lucky and is chosen by a family in New York. In the U.S. he gets a good education and goes to college. One day he gets an email that tells him his father is still alive. He goes to Sudan and finds him. The father greets him by pouring water over Salva's head. On the way home, Salva remembers the water and thinks of a plan to help the people of Sudan who have little water. Back in America he puts his plan to action. The second story is about a girl named Nya. She has to walk very far everyday to get water. One day some men came to Nya's village. They were going to start digging a well with a big drill. After a long time they finished and Nya's village had running water. Nya went to go thank the man in charge of the workers and he told her his name was Salva!!!

  6. This book was amazing!!! I really enjoyed how the stories came together in the end. This book is about two stories one takes place in 2008 about a girl named Nya and the other one takes place in 1985 and is about a boy named Salva. One day while Salva was at school war broke out and everyone who could evacuated town. Salva was separated ;from his family and traveled away from war with people he didn't know. While they were traveling he met up with his uncle and finally thought he had some family now but a group of men robbed them and shot his uncle. Salva and some other people made it safely to Ethiopia and to the refugee camps. While Salva was there he learned some English and one day heard that they were going to pick some young men to go to America. Salva was one of the lucky ones. He got adopted by an American family and went to college. While he was in America Salva got a message that his Dad was alive in Sudan. Salva traveled back to Sudan and found his father and was told his mother and some siblings were alive. Salva wanted to give back to his home town in Sudan, so he created a fund to make wells so people have water. Nya is a little girl who has to walk very far every day to get a bucket of water. One day in Nya's town two men came with a big drill and started to drill a whole. They were making a well for them. after all the work was done they had clear cold water. Nya wanted to thank the man that did this for them. He told her his name was Salva!!!

  8. this book is pretty good, yet confusing. It takes place in arabia. It is in two different peoples point of veiw. the boy named saliva was in school during a bomb and had to escape. when he escapped he got seperated from his family and was stuck with a huge tribe. Then there was a girl named nya who wanted to have a well near her house cause she had to walk a long way to water every day and it was tiering . While Saliva was in the tribe on the way to ethiopea he was in a camp and he was chosen to go to America. Later in the story he became very successful and built wells for people back n his country . in the end Salvia and Nya met.

  9. A long walk to water is a very symbolic book for me, it touched my heart very deeply. The fact that Nya has to walk everyday for 8 hours just to get water shows the determination and great strive for her family to be well. She is a magnificent character who loves her family and will do anything for her family. I really loved this book, it is one of my favorites this year!
