The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann

5 Stars

In Quill, 13-year-olds were divided into two groups - the Wanted and Unwanted.  The Wanted were chosen to study at the University and if proven to be loyal and valuable to their government, were later selected to serve Justine, the powerful High Priestess of Quill.  The Unwanteds were the children who had been in trouble before, not followed the rules, or had shown at a young age the desire for creative expression.  These 13 year olds were "different" from the Wanted were deemed unworthy to live.  The Unwanteds were taken away from Quill and their families - eliminated and executed.

Alex was chosen as one of the Unwanteds.  Taken from his family and his Wanted twin brother, Aaron, Alex knew his life was now over.  Once he arrives at the Death Farm, however, Alex learns he has a much better fate awaiting.  The Death Farm is actually a different society which is overseen by a kind man named Marcus Today.  Marcus has created a new world for the Unwanteds - one where magic and creativity abound.  The Unwanteds are allowed to be themselves here and to continue living in a world far from Quill - one which encouraged them to become the person they each wanted to be.

Alex is relieved to have a second chance at life.  Instead of being truly happy, though, he finds himself constantly thinking of his twin, Aaron.  He knew Aaron would love living there with his brother if only given the chance. Determined to learn magic and find a way to reach out to his brother and "rescue" Aaron from the tyranny and oppression which existed in Quill, Alex finds a way to transport himself back to Quill. Instead of a happy reunion where Alex shares with his twin Aaron the secret wonderful, magical world which exists beyond Quill's walls, Alex learns his brother is not who he seemed to be.  Aaron only cares for himself and has his own ruthless quest for power.  He will betray his friends and sacrifice his own twin to prove his loyalty to Justine.

Alex has now exposed the Death Farm to Quill.  The secret world and escape for the Unwanteds will be destroyed unless the government of Quill is defeated.  The Unwanteds must prepare for battle in order to protect and defend their world. The young teens know the odds may be against them as they prepare to fight against trained soldiers - and even worse, many will be forced to fight their own former friends and family, the Wanteds who watched them be sent away to die - in order for the Unwanted to continue living.

A great page turner!

  1. I read the book The Unwanteds, I loved it for having such a creative technical upgrades. I especially liked the way each character acted and was described. I also loved the magic in the book and the deep meaning for the creative world to save all the unwanteds... and also making a home for all the magical animals and charms. Alex one of the twins is declared unwanted and his brother Aron is wanted while Alex is sent off to the death camps and instead the find the creative, wonderful world of Artime. But once Quill the strict, uncreative world finds out about Artime and the secrets out they have an all out war....you'll have to read the book your self to find out the outcome!

  2. The Unwanteds is AWESOME!!!!!! It is definitely one of my favorite books! It is so cool how the author decides to make two worlds. the story is about a boy called Alex and his twin brother Aaron. Aaron becomes a Wanted and Alex a Unwanted. Instead of being eliminated the Unwanteds are saved by a mage/magician called Mr.Today(nice name) who has created a wonderful wordle called Artime. There the Unwanteds learn magical spells to us against their enemies. Alex tries to save his brother and bring him to Artime. He won't come and instead leads High Priest Justine to the magical world. Quill and Artime battle and Artime prevails. Sadly in the process Alex gets badly hurt and almost dies. His brother is the one who hurt him. A spy from Artime becomes the new leader of Quill and the two lands live in peace.
I LOVED this book and can't wait to read the second one!!!!!!!!!!

  3. This book was well writen and had an excellent plot. My only problem was that the point of view was constanly changing characters, and it would often take me a minute to figure out who I was reading about. Other than that, it was a great book and I can't wait for the next one.

  4. This book completely blew my mind. I am one to like creative books and this one was by far the greatest i have ever read. It combine most likeable dramas like war, imagination and a little romance between Alex, the main character and lonnie. In this world called a artime where the "eliminated" children learn about creativity and magical spells. I recomomend this book to anybody who enjoys creativity. Amazing book cant wait for the second one!

  5. this book to me was crazy because just thinking about being so young and having to be picked just to stay with the ones you love in a safe enviorment ..... i couldnt imagine that. it was cool that the author thought about how to divide the wanteds from the unwanteds and to no that the eliminated children got curious and learned they have special powers.i was sad to find out that you couldnt be creative with your powers and to me i think it was because the peolpe were afraid the unwanteds would work together to take over and find their way back home but thats not my call.it also had war in it and i dont like violence but it was still cool!.i never have really been a fan of books with spells and magical powers but this book has me hooked and i cant wait to read more from this author!!!!!!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

  6. The Unwanteds was a book that I knew I wanted to read as soon as I heard about it. I love fantasy, magic books like this, so I was expecting to love it. I wasn't expecting to love it this much. Unwanteds was one of the best books I've ever read. It was good on a Harry Potter level of writing. The idea of being taken away and killed for being creative was a terrible idea to me, and it was amazing to find that they weren't killed. Instead, they were taken secretly to Artime... I would love to live like that. I particularly liked the ideas of talking blackboards and teleport tubes. I absolutely adored this book, and anyone reading it should prepare to have their lives changed.
